ONLINE PROJECT 13 - May 19-26 - Factoring

Introduction

You have learned three common situations and how to factor in each situation. For each situation, a different factoring method is used.
Situation 1 Example: 6x-9 --> factored: 3(2x-3) Method: pull out GCF
Situation 2 Example: x^2 - 5x + 6 --> factored: (x-3)(x-2) Method: X-Factor
Situation 3 Example: 3x^2 -13x -10 --> factored: (3x+2)(x-5) Method: X-Box

PROJECT:

In a NEW Internet window, go to mathwithmrflisak, then click on the 'ONLINE Math Help' button. On the Math Help Online page, scroll down to see the table of links below. Look for the 'Algebra' heading and go to the very bottom of that column. There, you will find the cell with the 'Factoring' links. Click on the 'Factoring Practice' link.

    • On the webpage, click #5. which says: "Mixture of 1-4". THEN, click on the 'START' button.

Do AT LEAST 5 questions and type in the original polynomial and factored form below. Do all your work on a separate page. Hand this separate in to Mr.Flisak on Monday.

To do this week's Online Project, you have to join a website called Explore Learning. Explore Learning is a great website for learning math and science using online games and activites called Gizmos. Click on this link for directions on how to join: How to Join Explore Learning

Once you've joined Explore Learning, go to 'Math Help Online' from the main page at mathwithmrflisak. Near the top of the 'Math Help Online' page, you'll see a graphical link for the Explore Learning website. Click on that link to get to Explore Learning. Click on the 'Log in' button on the top left side of the page.

Launch the first Gizmo called 'Modeling the Factorization of ax^2+bx+c'. Use this Gizmo to FACTOR at least 5 different quadratic polynomials and write in the quadratic with its factors below:

To do this week's Online Project, you have to join a website called Explore Learning. Explore Learning is a great website for learning math and science using online games and activites called Gizmos. Click on this link for directions on how to join: How to Join Explore Learning

Once you've joined Explore Learning, go to 'Math Help Online' from the main page at mathwithmrflisak. Near the top of the 'Math Help Online' page, you'll see a graphical link for the Explore Learning website. Click on that link to get to Explore Learning. Click on the 'Log in' button on the top left side of the page.

ONLINE PROJECT 10 - Apr.21-25 - Multiplying Binomials Using FOIL

Introduction: In a NEW Internet window, go to mathwithmrflisak, then click on the 'ONLINE Math Help' button. On the Math Help Online page, scroll down to see the table of links below. Look for the 'Algebra' heading and go to the very bottom of that column. There, you will find the cell with the 'Multiplying Polynomials and Factoring' links. Click on the 'Multiplying Binomials - FOIL' link.

Scroll down to the bottom of that webpage where there is a question and two white boxes. Multiply the binomials and type in your answer into the first box. * Use the '^' symbol above number 6 on your keyboard for exponents *
Combine like terms and type your simplified polynomial into the second box.

ONLINE PROJECT 9: Apr.14-18 - Multiplying Monomials

Introduction: In a NEW Internet window, go to mathwithmrflisak, then click on the 'ONLINE Math Help' button. On the Math Help Online page, scroll down to see the table of links below. Look for the 'Algebra' heading and go to the very bottom of that column. Look in the box with the title 'Multiplying Polynomials and Factoring'. There, you will find a link named: 'Multiplying Monomials'. Click on this link and follow the steps on the website. By doing this, you will review and better understand how to multiply monomials. At the end, there is a 10 question quiz.

ONLINE PROJECT 8: Apr.7-11 - Solving by Elimination

Introduction: In a NEW Internet window, go to mathwithmrflisak, then click on the 'ONLINE Math Help' button. On the Math Help Online page, scroll down to see the table of links below. Look for the 'Algebra' heading and go to the very bottom of that column. Look in the box with the title 'Systems'. There, you will find a link named: 'Solve by Elimination'. Click on this link.

Scroll down to the very bottom of that webpage. There, you will see a system of 2 equations. Decide which equation must be multiplied (sometimes both have to be multiplied). Do the multiplication in your head or on paper. Then, type in each equation into the blank boxes. THEN, add the two equations to get just one equation. Type this one equation into the one empty box on the very right side. Using that, on paper, or in your head, get the x and y values of the solution and type them in.

Do at least 5 problems.

There are 2 sliders beside the graph. One is named 'm' and the other is named 'b'.

Introduction: In a NEW Internet window, go to mathwithmrflisak, then click on the 'ONLINE Math Help' button. On the Math Help Online page, scroll down to see the table of links below. Look for the 'Algebra' heading and go to the very bottom of that column. Look in the box with the title 'Polynomials'. There, you will find a link named: 'Adding/Subtracting'. Click on this link. On that page, there is a 12 question adding and subtracting polynomials multiple choice quiz. Simplify each problem and select an answer. It will tell you if you chose the correct or incorrect answer.

ONLINE PROJECT 5: Mar.3-10 - Solving Inequalities

Introduction: In a NEW Internet window, go to mathwithmrflisak, then click on the 'ONLINE Math Help' button. On the Math Help Online page, scroll down to see the table of links below. Look for the 'Algebra' heading and go to the very bottom of that column. Look in the box with the title 'Inequalities'. There, you will find a link named: 'Solving Inequalities. Click on this link.

Assignment: Solve 10 inequality problems on paper and put the answers on your webpage.

Steps:
1. If the problem given by the website has an '=' sign, click on the 'New Problem' button until you see a '>' or '<' sign.
2. Write down the problem you see on your paper.
3. Solve it showing all work and using your calculator to get a decimal answer.
4. Type your answer into the box on the webpage.
5. Press the 'Check your Answer' button.
6. On your paper, draw a number line. Graph your solution.
7. Type your original inequality AND the solved inequality on your webpage. Also, add three possible solutions for x.

  • If you do more than 10 problems, you will get Extra Credit points.

ONLINE PROJECT 4: Feb.19-22 - Inequalities

Introduction: In a NEW Internet window, go to mathwithmrflisak, then click on the 'ONLINE Math Help' button. On the Math Help Online page, scroll down to see the table of links below. Look for the 'Algebra' heading and go to the very bottom of that column. There, you will find a link named: 'On a Number Line' under the 'Inequalities' title. Click on this link.

Assignment: At the bottom of the internet page there is a number line with 2 blanks above it. On a separate piece of paper, draw the number line that you see and write down the inequality statement that matches it. Then, on the computer, use the drop down menu by the first blank to chose the type of inequality sign. In the second blank, type in a number. Hit the <ENTER> key when you're done. It will tell you if you are correct.

When you check your answer, type in your inequality statement AND some possible values for x. Repeat all this 10 times (at least).
Example: x>=-5 X can be: -5 -4, 0, 6, 1 million, etc.

ONLINE PROJECT 3: Feb.11-15 - Linear Equations

Introduction: In a NEW Internet window, go to mathwithmrflisak, then click on the 'ONLINE Math Help' button. On the Math Help Online page, scroll down to see the table of links below. Look for the 'Algebra' heading and go to the very bottom of that column. There, you will find a link named: 'Writing Equations'. Click on this link.

Use the internet page that comes up to complete this Project. At the bottom of the page is a graph and an empty box.
STEPS:
1. Look at the graph.
2. On a separate paper, write the equation of the line on the graph in y = mx+b form.
3. On your paper, change the equation into standard form by: getting rid of the fraction AND moving the x over.
4. Type your standard equation into the box on the webpage and PRESS <ENTER>.
5. Add the y=mx+b AND standard form equation to your webpage.
6. Press the <Refresh> button on the webpage to create a new graph.
7. Do the same thing at least 5 times -- your website Project should have at least 5 equation pairs to be complete.
You will get Extra Credit for any more that you do.

m is slope and b is the y-intercept
